WPC Pre-Orders for WooCommerce Premium adds a pre-order workflow to WooCommerce products that are not ready to ship yet or are temporarily unavailable. Store owners can set pre-orders at product level or manage them separately for each variation, then use release dates, pricing rules, cart controls and customer notifications to define how those orders behave.
Pre-orders with clear rules
The useful part of this plugin is the number of decisions it brings into the product setup rather than leaving pre-orders as a manual note. A product can have an optional release date, so a known launch can show a schedule while a restock with no firm date remains marked as forthcoming. An automatic mode also converts out-of-stock products into pre-orders, which suits shops that want to keep taking demand during a restocking delay.
Pricing is configurable as either a percentage or a fixed adjustment. That supports a pre-order discount, but also covers a price increase where the store needs to account for an early-order arrangement. The product page includes a live countdown timer when a release date is set, giving customers a more specific indication of timing than a static availability message.
Checkout and order handling
Pre-orders often create friction when they share a cart with immediately available items. WPC Pre-Orders addresses that directly with cart restrictions: the store can separate pre-orders from regular products or permit only one pre-order in a cart. Payment restrictions provide another practical control, including the option to disable gateways such as cash on delivery when a pre-order is present.
Orders receive a dedicated wc-pre-ordered status, making them easier to distinguish from ordinary WooCommerce orders. Product editors also get Ajax actions for manually releasing pre-orders. For stores using WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage, HPOS compatibility is included in the stated feature set.
Release and customer updates
The notification flow covers two important points in the order lifecycle: a pre-order confirmation and an email when the product becomes available. These messages are delivered through WooCommerce, so the feature fits the store’s existing order communication rather than requiring a separate notification system.
Automatic release is handled by an hourly cron job once the release date is reached. Customers also get a Pre-Orders tab in their WooCommerce My Account area, giving them a dedicated place to see relevant orders instead of relying only on email. On the administration side, product-list filters separate active and released pre-orders, which is useful when a catalogue contains several launches or restocks at once.
Where it falls short
The feature set introduces operational choices that a simple “available soon” label would avoid. Cart separation, payment exclusions, pricing adjustments and per-variation settings all need deliberate configuration, particularly for products with several sizes or other variations. A shop with a small number of occasional pre-orders may find that level of control heavier than its process requires.
Release timing is another trade-off. Automatic release is tied to an hourly cron job, so it is not described as an instantaneous event at the exact release minute. Stores that promise precise launch timing still need to account for that schedule and retain the manual release controls as part of their process. Finally, a blank release date supports a TBD pre-order, but the countdown experience is only meaningful where a date exists; customers facing an unconfirmed restock receive less timing information.
Who it suits
This is a focused fit for WooCommerce shops selling planned launches, limited production runs, crowdfunded products or items affected by restocking delays. It is particularly suited to stores that need different rules for pre-order and normal purchases, such as blocking cash on delivery or keeping the two order types apart.
The plugin makes the most sense where pre-orders are a recurring part of fulfilment and the team needs status filtering, release controls and customer emails in one WooCommerce workflow. If the requirement is only to display a short availability message, its pricing, cart, payment and release options are likely more administration than necessary.
